Dialectical Behaviour Therapy
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) was initially developed by Marsha Linehan to treat Borderline Personality Disorder.
Research shows that DBT strengthens a person’s ability to manage stress without losing control or acting in a destructive manner.
DBT teaches four critically important skills:
-
Distress Tolerance Skills to cope better with painful events.
-
Mindfulness Skills to overcome negative judgements about oneself and others.
-
Emotion Regulation Skills to learn how to identify emotions and not feel overwhelmed by them.
-
Interpersonal Effectiveness Skills to express your needs, set boundaries, and communicate assertively.
